THE ANC in the Eden District council walked out of a meeting yesterday (March 31) to elect a new mayor after two nominees were tied for the position, forcing another round of voting next Monday.
ANC chief whip Piet van der Hoven said they would boycott meetings until a new mayor was elected to replace Rudi Laws, who resigned from the DA last month to join the ANC.
Fareed Stemmet, of Icosa, and Leon Dorfling, of the Eden Forum, each received 15 votes. The ANC wanted the election to take priority as it hopes to see heads roll if its motions to remove ID deputy mayor Jurie Harmse and DA speaker Hannes Bouwer are adopted.
