Jonty and other great fielders Grandstand, by Leslie LightfootWHO is the worlds best fielder? South African cricket followers will undoubtedly lay their heads on the block for Jonty Rhodes, with Herschelle Gibbs running him a close second. Both feature on SABC3 this evening in Best Catches, a programme which will start the debate anew ahead of next years World Cup. Former Indian great Srikkanth Raju has listed Rhodes, Gibbs, Indias Azhar Mahmoud, Shivnarine Chanderpaul of the West Indies, and Australians Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh as the best fielders he has seen. Best Catches acts as introduction to Best Cricket, a 26-part series SABC3 is introducing into its schedule on Thursday next week.
PERHAPS it isnt an official trial, but the cricket match in Pretoria tomorrow (Saturday) will give the selectors a pretty shrewd idea of the state of the game. The Hotshots, captained by Neil Mckenzie, and the Howzats (Dale Benkenstein) tackle each other in a match of 25 overs per team on the University of Pretoria ground. Several current Proteas are playing, with their team mates attending the match to cheer them on. The match runs from 10.30am to 7pm, and is being screened live on CSN and SS1. It is in aid of the Sports Trust and profits are earmarked to support school development. The game is part of Supersports annual Supersport Show over the weekend. While the cricketers are busy, the 13 regional finalists in the Superfan competition will take their places in the fishbowl at the University of Pretoria sports centre. Having won through by staying awake for 48 hours in their regions, the finalists are trying for 54 sleepless hours (noon today to 6pm on Sunday) as they aim for the first prize totalling some R150 000. Its not an easy challenge, either. That specially built fishbowl is well-lit so that spectators can see through the one-way glass, which keeps it pretty warm. Add the hot glare of the television lights, and it can be more like a sauna not at all conducive to keeping the eyelids apart. The video of the final will screen on CSN next week.
