Festival heads for climax By Bob Eveleigh, Entertainment EditorWITH the 2002 PE Dance Festival due to reach its climax on Saturday with the staging of the junior and senior trophy winners concerts, the other events of note are the Shawn Phillips No Category single concert at the Boardwalks Tsitsikamma Conference Centre at 8pm on Friday and jazz with Feya Faku and Stompie Mavi at Great Centenary Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday. Beginning with the two dance performances, which never fail to deliver tremendous entertainment value year after year, for the junior trophy-winners concert at 2.30pm, tickets are priced at R15 (pupils) and R20 (adults). For the senior award-winners show starting at 7.30pm, prices rise slightly to R20 (pupils) and R25 (adults). These seats are all bookable in advance at the Opera House.
MOVING to the Shawn Phillips visit, the ever popular singer, who has a huge following in this country, is in the midst of his fourth trip to South Africa. This is related to the promotion of his latest album, No Category, but he is also taking the opportunity to re-introduce his new wife, Juliette Opperman Phillips, who hails from Port Elizabeth. As the clich notes, however, she really needs no introduction as she was long active in both the cinema and radio fields when previously resident in the Friendly City. Phillips was, in fact, deservedly presented with a Lifetime Achievement award by his record company, recognising his outstanding contribution to music over his 40-year career, about a week ago at a special ceremony in Sandton. The No Category CD, recorded in Los Angeles in April and entirely financed by his fans, is Phillipss 18th studio album and features an all-star band and production team, including 2002 best arranger/composer Grammy winner Paul Buckmaster. No Category is an apt title for any Shawn Phillips album and songs to be heard on the CD and in the live show are led off by a re-working of Moonshine, one of the more intriguing tracks from an earlier Phillips album, Collaboration. That should indicate to the singers many fans that he is returning to his musical roots with this mix, the items on which have been arranged by him along with pianist J Peter Robinson. The Boardwalk appearance is under the Centrestage banner.
ON the jazz front, the Metro Promoters Association (NEMMPA) will present ace trumpeter Feya Faku and vocalist Stompie Mavi in concert at the Great Centenary Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday evening. Supporting acts will be made up of the band 4 x 4, the PE Ensemble and Uitenhages Yenkie Brothers Band. Tickets at the door coat R40, or R30 in advance from various outlets contact Phumla Citeko on 082 7447 521 or Danny Mongo 083 7705 174 for further information.
