Pupils warned about dangers of drug use By Nonzwakazi Cekete AN ANTI-drug organisation based in Cape Town visited two Port Elizabeth schools yesterday to give educational talks about the dangers of drug use. Narconon executive director and former drug addict Robert van der Feyst spoke to pupils at Harvest Christian School and Linkside High School. He told how his life was affected by drugs and how he eventually decided to quit after the addiction began to destroy his life. “I felt the need to help others, but in order for me to do that I had to help myself and I eventually stopped,” he said. During the talk he explained the effects of alcohol and drugs and the myths surrounding them. The Linkside High School Grade 11 teacher who arranged for Narconon to address the school, Rosemary Fouche, said: “This talk is an empowerment tool which will teach the Grade 10 and 11 pupils to make a responsible choice.” Mrs Fouche said that the school chose to involve Grade 10 and 11 pupils because at this age they were “close to being adults and thus they need to be aware of the dangers and be in touch with reality”. The talk, at a cost of R5 per pupil and including an information booklet, gave pupils the opportunity to ask questions about issues affecting them and involving drugs. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire to establish what they had learnt. Narconon is an NGO started 30 years ago which says it seeks to help people regain their ability to think clearly and achieve their goals without drugs.
